This book gathers the essential knowledge to fully exploit the technical possibilities of the traditional photographic process: from the operation of the camera obscura, the characteristics of photographic material, and lighting conditions, to basic notions of applied chemistry, or the foundations of image composition. A simple and practical book, born from the author's notes for his photography classes at the Escola Massana in Barcelona, that introduces us to the original universe of analog photography.

Jordi Gumí (1931-2013) was a Catalan photographer specialized in industrial, commercial, and editorial photography. For about thirty years, he was a photography teacher at the Escola Massana in Barcelona and, in his dual role as a chemist and photographer, he wrote about photography and artistic research.
